FFFFFFFFFFFUUUUUUUULLLLLLLLLLYYYYY SICCKKKKKKKKK SUSTAINABLE!!!!!!
Task 6
In your opinion, how should the industrial design community react to the climate change solution discussed in this movie?
This animation from ww.storyofstuff.com is very interesting they also have other interesting and easy to understand videos from that website. Major companies are influencing government parties to make treaties that benefit themselves to pocket a lot of money. I believe people around the first world countries are ignorant because they do not know the price that is being paid for their life style and this is due the information provided by the companies believing that they are helping the environment. But if people are exposed to the actual harm that earth is facing then they can have an actual idea of the destruction caused which can ultimately open their eyes and lend a helping hand.
Since designers have the ability to shape the way we live I reckon that designers should tackle carbon emissions by designing products that rely on reusable energy resources. Backed by the public who will be in demand of these products therefore this would force companies to follow this new trend set by designers which would lead to less use of carbon emissions.
Task 5 Design for life
Reflect on the design ethics that Starck wanted the young product designers to demonstrate.
Starck has opened up a design contest allowing 12 contestants from England to participate in France. Through the 6 episodes he encourages the designers to design more sustainable products into the world. He repeatedly reminds contestants that there are too many products designed into the world and the best designs are the ones that last.
Starck’s different approach to design is a bit “wacky” but very interesting the way he thinks about design. He says that he doesn’t have a philosophy but I think he does because he bases a lot of his design on sustainability. The weird thing is that I think that he is very hypocritical they way he behaves, he rides his motor bike everywhere he goes instead of riding a bike.
The designer that I reckon should have had won was Nebil, it was very unfair the way he was voted off the show compared to all the other designers. The winner Ilsa had a very interesting design but I still would of wanted to see what Nebil could of came up with in the final design phase. Watching this series was very interesting to know what angles to approach a design project to design it in a way so that it is sustainable.

OMFGGGGG MASSSIVE!!!!!

Task: 3 11th Hour
Reflect on the catastrophic effects of environmental neglect and abuse. How should industrial designers reshape their activities in the order to avoid large-scale ecological problems in the future and to restore the natural balance?
This documentary has opened my eyes in what human species has done to the planet, in the documentary it mentions that “catastrophic natural disasters” are not the main course of destruction but the people living on the planet are. Most spokesmen in the video describe humans as “infections on the planet” this is because most products that have been manufactured follow the same product life cycle, which is regularly ended up in landfills.
The reason why earth is getting destroyed at such acceleration is because “Too many of us using too much resource too fast”. People living in first world countries are getting all the benefits of products but the process it goes through causes a lot more harm to the planet. “We don’t pay the full price when we purchase a product” suggest that there is far more harm done when purchasing a simple product because of the cycle it goes through.
Industrial designers have to be able to design products that are more sustainable and are able to incorporate with the consumer’s lifestyle, so that it can help avoid large scale ecological problems. “Making a change is the right choice” Consumers are caught up in the destruction of the planet without even knowing but through design Industrial designers have the ability to carve the right path for consumers without affecting their current life style.
Towards the end of the video it shows possible ways in the future modifying buildings to be more sustainable to ultimately live in harmony with nature without having to changing the current consumer life style. An American Indian Chief quotes “Earth has all the time in the world and we don’t “implies that we should act quickly in preserving the planet or we might end destroy it and die out. Industrial designers should follow that same concepts they have for structures but into everyday products to maximize sustainability.

TASK: 2 OBJECTIFIED

Reflect on society’s complex relationship with manufactured objects and the people who design them. What can we learn about who we are, and who we want to be, from the objects with which we surround ourselves?

Products essentially make up our daily life without us even knowing they exist but through the video it explains how much effort is used to design products to connect consumers to their products which ultimately shape the consumers way of life. In this video it takes us deep into the designer’s way of thinking and their philosophy behind designing products.

“The way we think of design is that we put great design into everyday things and understand how to make these gadgets perform better “. Dan Formosa

This quote from Dan implies designing a product into consumer’s everyday life and improving it without them even knowing it. So designing a product to suit all users, you would have to look at the boundaries of all users of the product and if it is successful then the average person will be able to use the product without noticing the difference at all.

As a designer my philosophy is fundamentally none disposable and somehow trying to offer products you want to keep, products that you feel most importantly will stand in the test of time”. Marc Newson

Marc wants to design a product that form such strong connection between the user in a way that it makes it so valuable to them that it could last a life-time. Combining different materials implementing personal attributes to the product can bond the user and the product together which make it sustainable for a life time no matter what the product is.

“Am I playing a game to show that I can differentiate or am I actually doing something that is contributive because it’s such a big issue with design is, are the things we doing making an effect and making change?” Karim Rashid

This strong quote suggests that are designers just designing products because they can? or are they designing products so that are actually useful, practical and sustainable. He believes that products shouldn’t be just produced if they are going to be sent to landfills because they break, wear out or isn’t effective because thought wasn’t put into the design.
